Resources to help you design your website

More bad design you don't want on a site

You, as a web designer should be designing your website so your visitors have the greatest ease of use. You want your surfers to have a good experience and you want to make a great impression. Trust is a big issue for the people visiting your site so even if you have the greatest thing since sliced bread you won't be able to sell as much of it as you should because of a poorly done website with lousy design.

Good design doesn't mean it's a good graphical design altho if you are using graphics they should be hi quality graphics. A professional web designer will know that there are many components that contribute to good design. Sites need to be designed for accessibility, layout of site, ease of use for your visitors and good graphics.

Some features of the worst sites I've ever visited are below. It can be used as a checklist for things not to do when designing your website. If you do any of these things on your site you really should fix them and you will then make more money and isn't that the point.

Design great sites and pages

Background music is simply bad, period. Unless you are creating a site which sells CDs, promotes a band or group or anything related to music. Background music might sound good to you at first but if you are a surfer and you come to a big site with hundreds or even thousands of pages every time a visitor hits a new page the music starts over. If I were at a site like that I wouldn't bother to shut my speakers off, I'd just go visit another site that doesn't irritate me. Besides, it takes even longer for a page to load if your users are on a dial up connection.

There are a lot of sites out there that use fonts that are so small you can hardly read them. Younger people may have eyesight good enough to read ultra small text but most users won't work at reading it and just leave. Huge font's are just as bad and also look bad most of the time. The fonts you use on your site should be readable by everyone and have a size that won't cause eyestrain. No matter how good your site is if your visitors can't read it you won't sell a thing.

I really hate popup windows and visitors say they do to but I know from testing I can increase sales by using one popup to offer them something special when they leave my site. As a general rule they shouldn't be used at all but used correctly you can make a bit of extra money with them. DO NOT popup windows when visitors arrive at your site. They will just kill the windows as fast as they can without even reading them and downgrade your site in their own mind. Popping up windows when they arrive will drive some of them off and then your sales will be down from where they could be.

As a webmasters it's your job to make sure your website does what it's supposed to do and does it effectively. Don't let minor mistakes stop your visitors from buying something from you.
