How to create a subscription websiteSo you want to know how to create a subscription website? Lol, creating a subscription website is pretty easy. The security for the subscription part of the site is a bit tougher. The easy part is designing the outside of your subscription site. The only difference is you need to put the subscription part of the site in another directory and you can't have any links into it from the rest of your website. For a recurring revenue site you should carry the theme from the outside of the subscription part to the inside. It keeps things consistent and makes your members feel better. So the reality is if you can design the non recurring part of your site, sometimes called the frontend, you can design the inside as well. The first problem you're going to have is how do you get paid for the subscriptions and how do you keep track of when the members need to be rebilled for the recurring revenue or their password disabled because they cancelled or their card was maxed out? Are you going to keep track of all that? Are you going to process your credit card applications? The easiest way to run the inside of the site and collect the money for memberships is to use a payment processor. A lot of people seem to be using Paypal but most of the time the hoops Paypal makes potential member jump through to use his credit card can cost you members. There are other options and the one I use for my subscription sites is CCBill. They manage all the billing, passwords, refunds and everything else you might run into. All you do is put the site up then go to CCBill, register and follow the instructions. That takes care of that part of it. Yes, there is a charge for them doing all of that but it's certainly easier than doing it yourself. It's well worth it. The hardest part to deal with is site security for the portion of your website that is the subscription part. Yes, you can use htaccess for security but the problem with that is it's not very secure. You don't want people breaking into your subscription area and getting what you are selling, for free. There are a lot of website security products out there and I've tried a few of them. However the only one I use anymore is called Strongbox. It was created for adult sites and those are the sites most attempted to be hacked. Strongbox keeps out everyone. I've had lots of attempted hacks but none has worked since Strongbox was installed. It's saved me a ton of time and money since I had it installed. It lets people surf just like they would normally and it also lets them download movies, videos, pics, scripts and whatever else you have in the protected portion of your site. Some security scripts have problems with videos, scripts and other things but Strongbox solves all of those for you. I've know the guy who wrote Strongbox for 10 years now and he's a smart guy. MOF, he's a geek. He saw a need for a lot better protection than htaccess could provide so he went and wrote Strongbox to solve the problems adult webmasters had with selling ID's and people without ID's getting in. You can take a look at Strongbox and get a better explanation of it at this link. Strongbox - The next generation in site security. I highly recommend it if you are starting a subscription website. Lol, I forgot to mention, CCBill also has, as part of their services, an affiliate management thing. As you can see, how to create a subscription website is pretty easy and with strongbox the security for your subscription website is pretty easy too. Using both CCBill or another payment processor along with the Strongbox security will give you everything you need and you won't have to worry about managing accounts, affiliates, or passwords. Managing your subscription website doesn't get any easier than using those two, together. |
