Reducing load time with image optimizationMore and more users are switching to broadband as the price comes down but still a lot of people are still running on slow dialup connections. You need to consider these people when designing your website as they are still a significant part of your visitors and you need a fast loading site for them. All of the text on your site will load quickly, even on a dialup connection. What slows everything down is usually large images that haven't been compressed at all. It's important to get a balance between graphics so you don't slow your site down so much your visitors leave before it's loaded in their browser. Every image on your site should be optimized so you can be sure it loads fast. You can use a lot of different editing packages and software to do this, some are even on line and free. Just be careful you don't compress your graphics so much they start to look bad. It's a fine line. With most software image applications when you choose to save a file as a jpg or jpeg a box will come up and let you choose the image quality you want. Try a couple of different settings until you find the one that makes size and clarity the best it can be. GIF's are usually bigger than jpgs but if you save a gig as a gif first and then resave it as a jpg it will be almost as clear as a gif.
You can also save your images in PNG(portable network graphics) format to get the best quality but I've always found the file sizes to be much bigger than compressed jpgs. Be careful with gifs if you are using a ton of colors and gifs don't use near as many colors as jpgs. If you stick to the windows colors you should be okay tho. |
