Membership Site Layout and CC Billing

Laying out a membership site is a fairly straightforward website design. It's not complicated at all and the recurring credit card billing is also fairly simple.

No, I don't say that because it's easy for me or I've done it for years, it is just easy to do and anyone can make a membership site. What you'll learn here is a basic membership site layout. From this basic layout you can make the site complicated as you want.

You should have learned by now that you have to have a domain of your own and a place to host it. If you aren't that far yet go read this site from the beginning and then come back to this page.

The front page or homepage of your site should be on the root of the domain and it should be the default page. Search engines like that better than anything else. So your domain name and home page would be at http://www.yourdomain.com/

Most of the hosts I use have index.htm as the top level default home page. When I create a file for the home page of any of my sites I name it just that. index.htm. That way when you link all you need to do is link to your domain name and the default home page will be there and be found.

It's a good idea to have a few pages before the membership directory. That allows you to tell them, in detail, something about what benefits they are going to get by joining your site.

Next you need a members directory. Under the root of your domain create a directory called members or whatever you want to call it. This is where all of your files will go that members have to pay to see. In my members directory I usually have 2-5 more sub directories so I can keep a neat filing system.

Your membership directory would then be at http://www.yourdomain.com/members/ and it should also have a home page file in it. This will be the first page people see after they login. NEVER link to your members directory from anywhere. There is no link from your root homepage to your members directory.

There are a couple of ways to grant people access to the members dir. One is to protect it with .htaccess and have people enter a pass word to get access. It's not hard to setup and you can find a ton of pages on how to setup htaccess. I'll tell you more about htaccess on another day.

The next thing you need is a credit card processor who does recurring billing. This will cost you anywhere from 10 to 15% of each member sale you make. That's not to bad tho as they handle all the credit card management, verification, billing, rebilling, disputes, etc.

I happen to use CCBill for my credit card processor as they have some nice things to help you and some really decent tracking stats and member management software. They also make it very easy for you to get setup because they do a lot of the work for you.

You'll have to fill out and fax in some paper work because dealing with credit cards requires a real signature, not an electronic one. After everything gets approved all you need to do is tell them what your domain name is and what the name of your membership directory is and they will set everything up for you.

When they are done you will get some html code or other code to copy and paste into your entrance page. The entrance page being the place where members enter their user name and password. CCBill will check to make sure they are a valid member and if they are it will let them in. If they aren't they won't get in.

It really is that simple. Of course you can make it much more complicated than that but you don't have to. Most site design is pretty easy and a membership site design with credit card and recurring billing can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be.
